How a farmhouse from 1897 became a place where people from everywhere come to live slowly.
1897
A farmhouse at the edge of town
A single-storey Portuguese farmhouse with whitewashed walls, a tiled roof and a yard under old trees. It stayed in the family for generations, and Montijo slowly grew around it, until the fields became streets and the farmhouse ended up in the middle of town.
Five years ago
An empty house, an open gate
It began five years ago. The property had stood empty since the host's great-grandparents passed away. Wondering, alone, how to make it possible, the host opened the gate, and volunteers and friends started coming to help.
By hand
Restored with volunteers
Volunteers from all over the world, through Workaway, worked side by side with the host: room by room, floor by floor, keeping the old floors and doors. Every room has someone's hands in it.
Today
A small community
Mateus, who was raised here until he was five, runs it with the people who live and stay here. Shared dinners, fire nights, music and ping-pong; hens, Pato the duck, pigs, a rabbit and two cats; eggs, lemons, oranges and vegetables from the garden.
Next
The past, with a bit of future
More rooms built through the winter, restored the same way, while Solarpunk Labs starts making the place run itself: solar power, water and the garden on small, repairable machines. An old farmhouse learning new tricks.
